Unicef has launched a mobile game to teach children in Latin America and the Caribbean about their rights. Right Runner has been designed by London-based design studio, Nexus (which also has offices in Los Angeles). Deborah Casswell, the studio’s creative director, says that the studio worked with UNICEF to work out an “engaging” way to educate children about their rights.
Experiential retail has been gaining popularity in recent years and seems to be here to stay. Ecommerce has disrupted the retail sector, but the desire for In Real Life shopping is on the rise, with millennials being more inclined to experience-related purchases. There has been a shift in the market, with the younger demographic valuing and investing in experiences over material possessions.
A couple of weeks ago we went to check out the Antony Gormley Exhibition at the Royal Academy. It really was an incredible show as you can see from these pictures. The thing we loved best was how the sculptures immersed us into the environment, creating talking points and experiences within the space. It made us think about the crossover between space, sculpture and art as a way to create immersive experiences in retail, turning stores into memorable destinations.
Pantone has announced its colour of the year for 2020, naming Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue as its choice. The artwork for Pink Floyd’s box set The Later Years has been unveiled — it has been designed by London-based studio Johnson Banks. The 18-disc set focuses on material created by band members David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright over the last thirty years. As well as albums like A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division, it includes live recordings, unreleased material, merchandise and a re-edited version of the rarely-seen 1987 film The Delicate Sound of Thunder.
Dr. Seuss Enterprises will soon launch a series of educational augmented reality apps designed to “enhance” the way children learn to read. UK innovation studio Sugar Creative has led the project, which will use content and characters from some of Seuss books to create an immersive learning environment. The drinks company is seeking to revolutionise the bar experience by serving cocktails by draught with a changing menu of drinks (as well as same favourite stand-bys). The gross income for the top 30 branding and design consultancies has declined for the first time in nine years, according to accountancy firm Moore Kingston Smith. The total gross income fell by 2.3% while operating profits overall decreased by 31.2%. While branding company The Imagination Group reported the largest gross income £76m, it was a decrease of 6% from the previous year’s £81.3m.

A dating app for queer people, based on traditional newspaper personal ads, has been launched. Lex aims to provide a platform for lesbian, bisexual, asexual and queer people, according to its founder Kelly Rakowski. It was previously run as an Instagram account called @personals where users would submit a dating profile in the style of a newspaper personal ad.
Paris Olympics pay homage to “female athletes” and the environment. Olympics branding is always a big event for the design world — some identities, like Otl Aicher’s 1972 designs for the Munich games have gone down in design legend. Time will tell about the Paris 2020 logo. Mixing Art Deco — next year’s Olympics will be start of this century’s 20s after all — and a classic French look, the logo depicted the French national icon, Marianne.
The majority of designers will be voting for a Labour government in the UK’s general election scheduled for 12 December, a Design Week poll shows. Over the course of four days, readers were asked to anonymously share their voting intentions with us, with 335 responding to the call. The results suggest that Labour, under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, has won the vote of the industry, with an overwhelming 55% of designers intending to vote red next week.
